The power for metro systems is sourced from the urban grid or regional power supply, stepped down by ground substations to medium-voltage power (35 kV or 10 kV) required by the metro system. Traction substations further step down and rectify the voltage into DC power suitable for metro trains (typically 750 V or 1,500 V), delivering electricity through overhead lines or the third rail.
